The Castle Project
The castle project is being carried out by the building owner, the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces, in collaboration with the A.P. Møller Foundation, Realdania, Nyborg Municipality, and Østfyns Museums.
In 2011, the idea of restoring and expanding Nyborg Castle emerged. The main ambition was to make the castle – an important part of Danish history – accessible to everyone. In 2013, the initial preliminary studies began, funded by Realdania and the A.P. Møller Foundation. By 2015, the financing for the construction and restoration project was secured, and as early as 2016, a winner of the architectural competition was selected. In 2018, the restoration of the old King’s Wing and the town square began, and it was completed in 2022.
Now the major construction work begins at Slotsholmen, and at the same time Østfyns Museer and Moesgaard’s architectural studio are working on an entirely new interpretation project (The King Arrives) in the old King’s Wing.
The castle project is being carried out by the property owner, the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces, in collaboration with the A. P. Møller Foundation, Realdania, Nyborg Municipality, and Østfyns Museer.
The castle project includes a restoration of the King’s Wing (completed in 2022), a new interpretation building, a new ring wall, and an elevation of the Watchtower (construction begins in 2026).
The castle is expected to be completed and ready to welcome visitors in 2028. It is anticipated that 100,000 visitors will visit Nyborg Castle each year.
CUBO Architects and JAJA Architects are behind the designs for the new extension and the elevation of the Watchtower.

HISTORY
The heart of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Nyborg Castle was strategically located in the center of the country and by the water, and in the 13th century King Erik Klipping began using the castle as a meeting place for gatherings with the most powerful men of the realm. Denmark’s first constitution was thus signed by Erik Klipping in 1282 at Nyborg Castle, and the town was so important that in 1525 Nyborg was designated the kingdom’s first royal residence city…
